Long ago, according to an ancient legend, the world had no colors except black, white, and gray. Everything was dull and lifeless. The Sky Spirit looked down from the heavens and felt sad for the people below. They needed something to bring joy and hope to their lives.
One day, the Sky Spirit called upon seven special birds. Each bird had a unique talent. The Sky Spirit gave each bird a different gift—a beautiful, vibrant color. The first bird received red, the second received orange, the third received yellow, and so on through violet. The birds were amazed by their brilliant new feathers.
"You must share these colors with the world," the Sky Spirit instructed. The seven birds flew together across the sky, their colorful feathers leaving trails of light behind them. Whenever rain fell from the clouds, the birds would fly through the drops, painting them with all seven colors.
The people below gazed up in wonder. They had never seen anything so beautiful. They named this magnificent sight a "rainbow" because it appeared when rain fell and the sun shone at the same time. The rainbow became a symbol of hope and happiness.
To this day, whenever you see a rainbow arching across the sky, remember the seven special birds who brought color to the world. Some people say that if you look carefully, you can still see the birds flying through the colorful arcs, keeping the legend alive.
